Supporting US expansion in predictive pricing software
About
Headquartered in Germany, 7Learnings develops predictive pricing software to help B2C retailers increase revenue and profitability. Following a €10m+ Series B raise, the business was preparing to launch operations in the United States.
Before hiring staff, leasing office space, and onboarding US customers, the founders wanted to be sure they had all the right insurances in place.
Key takeaway:
For venture-backed UK and EU science and technology companies, US expansion is not just a growth decision; it introduces a higher level of risk that needs to be managed intentionally.
A common mistake EU founders make is treating US insurance as a separate problem rather than part of a global strategy. Business benefit most when they engage adviser with on-the-ground expertise on both sides of the Atlantic early enough to create options, not constraints.
The challenge
The leadership team understood that the US is a more litigious and regulated environment than Europe. They were concerned about compliance, liability, and investor expectations, and initially assumed they would need to purchase entirely separate US insurance policies to protect the new entity.
The insight
7Learnings approached Aguila as a specialist tech broker with international capability. Rather than defaulting to a new standalone US insurance programme, we undertook a careful review of the existing European cover and identified that the real requirement was not duplication, but intelligent structuring.
By purchasing only the US policies that were required by local state law, and adjusting policies to give broader cover across the European parent and the US subsidiary, the business could achieve consistent protection, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency at group level. A hybrid approach that offers the best of both worlds.
A standard broker approach focused on territory-by-territory placement would have missed this opportunity.
What we did differently
With joined-up thinking and teams across the US, EU, and UK, we were able to:
- Analyse the existing European cover with a fresh international perspective
- Review contacts with new investors to identify insurance implications
- Secure quotes from insurers in both Europe and the USA
- Design and present options on both local and global insurance structures
- Clearly explain the trade-offs so the founders could make an informed decision
The outcome
The result was a cost-effective, comprehensive insurance programme that satisfied the needs of the founders, new investors and US customers. Risks were appropriately mitigated, compliance requirements met, and cover aligned across the group.
Most importantly, the leadership team was able to commit fully to their US expansion plans without uncertainty, delay or distraction.
“Aguila supported 7Learnings’ US expansion with a thoughtful, internationally minded approach that avoided unnecessary duplication while ensuring full regulatory compliance. Their smart structuring delivered consistent, cost-effective cover across our European and US operations. We were very happy with Aguila’s expertise and the confidence it gave our leadership team to focus on growth“
