Case Study
Securing the transition from R&D to patient onboarding
About
Otolmmune is a Cambridge-based precision immunology company and the creator of mOl Health, a regulated, MHRA-registered Class 1 Software as a Medical Device over web and app.
mOl Health gives people living with autoimmune and immune-mediated conditions access to advanced immune health testing, longitudinal health tracking, health history, resources, community and Al-powered insights in one integrated digital platform.
Key outcomes:
- Aligned specialised risk coverage across both data and clinical layers.
- Structured a scaling pathway from R&D to commercial launch.
- Delivered materially better medtech cover with no additional premium cost.
The challenge
As an early-stage regulated health company processing genomic and patient health data, they could not get the specialist advice they needed from their existing broker. The founders required specialist product and services liability that properly addressed medical software risks and bodily injury, coupled with cyber cover aligned to the sensitivity of patient genomic and health records.
They needed to balance tight pre-revenue budgets with getting the right protections in place for investors, stakeholders and to satisfy regulatory obligations. Their existing policies were expiring shortly, which was challenging given the critical inflection point in the company’s development.
The insight
The Aguila team took the time to properly understand the business – not just as an early-stage technology company, but as one that is also a regulated medical device manufacturer, processing some of the most
sensitive personal data that exists about their users.
We mapped the risks across Otolmmune’s upcoming growth phases, explored the cyber exposure associated with onboarding patients onto a medical-grade digital platform, and worked through worst-case scenarios at each stage of the soft launch as the software evolved.
We also reviewed Otolmmune’s supply chain dependencies – laboratory partners, phlebotomy providers, cloud infrastructure – and stress-tested what would happen if any element of the service was disrupted. We then went to market, engaging both the existing insurer and alternative providers to widen the options available.
The outcome
- Expanded coverage: enhanced insurance protection across employers’ liability, public liability, products and services liability, and cyber liability.
- Cost efficiency & higher limits: we achieved this broader coverage with no meaningful increase in premium, while simultaneously quadrupling (4x) the previous cyber cover limits.
- Successful launch: mOI Health launched on 14 May 2026 with a clear understanding of the company’s risk profile and robust protection for core assets.
- Strategic roadmap: we established a structured framework to evolve the company’s insurance coverage in tandem with future business phases, specifically aligning with upcoming B2B(2C) offerings.
“Launching a regulated health platform that processes genomic and special category data is not a straightforward insurance conversation. Aguila took the time to understand what we were actually building, helped to map our risks properly across the product and data layers, and came back with materially better cover.”
